WWII bomb found near Merkel’s Berlin apartment

German Chancellor Angela Merkel had to be evacuated from her central Berlin apartment over the weekend after a large unexploded World War II bomb was found by construction workers nearby.
The 100-kilogram (220-pound) bomb, which police said was Soviet-made, was discovered on Berlin's Museumsinsel (Museum Island) – a UNESCO world heritage sight – on Friday evening.
The local area was cordoned off, stopping public transport and theatre shows and forcing the evacuation of nearby homes including that of Merkel while the bomb was made safe overnight to Saturday.
The Bild am Sonntag newspaper said the bomb was only 10 centimetres underground and 100 metres from Merkel's flat. Unexploded ordnance is still regularly found throughout Germany more than 60 years after the end of the war.
