The Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC) has invited art historian Wu Hung to host a lecture titled “Moving Pictures: Ancient China’s Gift to World Art” on August 27 at the Macau Science Center Convention Hall.
Wu is a permanent member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a renowned art historian, critic and curator. He is a distinguished professor of the art history department and East Asian languages and civilizations department at the University of Chicago, the director of the Center for the Art of East Asia, and the consulting curator the Smart Museum of Art in Chicago.
In the lecture, Wu will analyze several well known ancient Chinese scrolls, such as “Nymph of the Luo River”, “Han Xizai Evening Banquet” and “Along the river during the Qingming Festival,”. Handscroll paintings are a type of Chinese art with distinctive cultural characteristics, boasting a long history and deep influence.
Wu will lead the audience to think about the social and cultural meaning of ancient Chinese handscroll paintings from an innovative perspective, and will explain how the creative use of handscroll paintings create a unique visual tradition in the world of art.
The lecture is part of the IC’s “Lecture by Masters of Culture” program, which began in 2013. The IC regularly invites world famous scholars, artists and individuals from cultural circles to come to Macau and share their experience and knowledge.
The lecture will be conducted in Mandarin with simultaneous translation to Portuguese. Admission to the lecture is free although limited seats are available. Reservations can be made online on the IC’s website from today, or by phone during office hours.
