Briefs | Ana Ivanovic retires from tennis at 29

Ana Ivanovic retired from tennis at age 29 Wednesday, ending a career in which she was ranked No. 1 in 2008 but can no longer play at the highest level because of injuries. In a live broadcast on Facebook, Ivanovic said “it was a difficult decision, but there is so much to celebrate.” The Serb won 15 tour titles, including the 2008 French Open, and is now ranked No. 63. “It’s been well-known that I’ve been hampered by injuries. I can only play if I can perform up to my own high standards and I can no longer do that,” she said. “So it’s time to move on.”

Canadian cyclist Ellen Watters dies after collision

The family of Canadian professional cyclist Ellen Watters says the 28-year-old has died after being hit by a car while training outside Sussex, New Brunswick.

The Watters family posted a statement on Facebook saying the cyclist did not have any brain function when doctors examined her on Tuesday. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Jim MacPherson says Watters’ bike and the car were travelling in the same direction on a rural road when the collision occurred on Friday. Police say they have spoken to the driver. No charges have yet been laid. Watters won gold at the Tour of Somerville race in New Jersey earlier this year and bronze at the Canadian Road Championships.
