Briefs | Gambia president refuses to step down

Gambia’s president-elect says he will be sworn in to office at the Gambian embassy in neighboring Senegal, as his country’s political crisis continues. Barrow won the December election, but President Yahya Jammeh, in power for more than two decades, is refusing to step down, saying he does not accept the result, citing irregularities.

German intel head warns against threats 

The head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency is warning that Europe needs to remain vigilant against the threat of extremist attacks. Hans-Georg Maassen told reporters in Berlin yesterday his agency has 548 extremists considered potentially dangerous enough to carry out an attack under surveillance. He says: “We have to assume that there will be more attacks in Europe and that means also more in Germany.”
