EU merchandise imports increase 22 pct

Merchandise imports from European Union countries to Macau have increased by 22 percent year-
on-year in August, reaching a total of MOP14.60 billion. Data released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) also revealed that merchandise imports from mainland China have surged by nine percent year-on-year, reaching MOP18.63 billion.
The imports of consumer goods rose by 11 percent to MOP36.85 billion, with imports of food and beverages (MOP7.55 billion) and watches (MOP5.47) increasing by 22 and 46 percent respectively. Imports of construction materials (MOP2.25 billion) grew by 34 percent.
The total merchandise export for August amounted to MOP751 million, up by five percent year-on-year. The total merchandise import was MOP7.20 billion, an increase of five percent year-on-year. Merchandise trade deficits amounted to MOP6.45 billion.
In the first eight months of 2014, the total value of merchandise export increased by eight percent year-on-year to MOP6.53 billion, of which the value of re-exports (MOP5.22 billion) increased by 11 percent. The total value of merchandise imports grew by 11 percent to MOP57.54 billion. CP
