The former coordinator of the International Law Office (GADI), Jorge Oliveira, is a member of the new government in Portugal, where he will serve as Secretary of State for Internationalization under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist government, which took oath yesterday.
Mr Oliveira arrived in Macau in 1989. He was involved in the drafting of the new gaming legislation in the early 2000s following the liberalization of the gaming industry, and represented the Macau government in several international fora. In the 1990s, Oliveira served as legal adviser to the Joint Liaison Group during the talks in the lead up to the handover of Portugal’s administration to China. He resigned in 2010 from his post at the gaming commission as well as his position as the head of the GADI, a position he had held for over two decades.
Another former Macau official, Eduardo Cabrita is the new Minister of State. He arrived in Macau in 1988, where he first worked as an adviser to the local executive. In 1989 he was appointed as chief of the Juridical Translation Office. He was also a teacher at the local judicial training center, before he returned to Portugal in 1996.
