The casino entrance
The Casino Greek Mythology, operating under the gaming license of Sociedade de Jogos de Macau S.A. (SJM), has been closed for at least the last five days, according to sources contacted by the Times.
The casino, operating on the premises of the Beijing Imperial Palace Hotel (formerly the New Century Hotel), reportedly closed on December 30 without any prior notice.
The hotel has been in the spotlight since 2012, when it was mired in an ownership dispute. At the time, a hotel shareholder, Ng Man-sun (also known as Ng Wai and Kai See Wai), was hospitalized after being attacked by a gang of six men inside the property. Ng was involved in a dispute with his former girlfriend and business partner, Chen Meihuan, who claimed that she owned 80 percent of the shares in Ng’s debt-ridden hotel.
In 2013, a ruling of the Macau Court of First Instance (TJB) resulted in the New Century Hotel being seized to pay for unpaid debts to the owner of a Macau-based travel agency, Energy Travel Agency Ltd.
Most recently, there were several cases, reported by the Times, where employees of the hotel located in Taipa staged protests at different occasions, demanding the payment of several months of unpaid salaries. The protest took the form of individuals climbing atop the edge of the property’s balcony, leading to the dispatch of police and firemen to the site of the incident, and the placement of a pneumatic cushion under the balcony in case of any attempt to jump down from the platform.
The protest only ceased after officials from the Labor Affairs Bureau (DSAL) promised to mediate the dispute with management staff.
The Times contacted the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) and SJM seeking comments regarding the reasons leading to the Casino Greek Mythology closure. No answers were given by press time.
