Labor union urges for halt to Vietnamese worker import

A labor union called on the government yesterday to restrict the flow of  foreign laborers from Vietnam into the region following the gang rape and deadly domestic violence committed allegedly earlier this month by Vietnamese nationals.
The civil group, commonly known as “Macau Workers’ Self-Help Association,” wished to make an example of the Vietnamese suspects, asserting that the move would be “intimidating enough” for other potential criminals from that country.
Iam Weng Hong, the union’s president, expressed his belief that “the nature of Vietnamese was not good” given that they were involved in other wrongdoings previously. “This is our personal view, and I believe there are a certain portion of citizens hoping to bring out a deterrent message through our demands,” said Iam. However, the association provided no statistics over their claim.
Asked if his intention was racist, the group’s head failed to answer the question, yet claimed that workers from other nations would “behave well” in the territory upon enforcement of such a policy.
“We would also protest against the Mainland Chinese if they committed similar crimes here, like rape,” one aged member explained. Last Friday, the Judiciary Police arrested an unemployed mainland man for raping his debtor in a Cotai hotel room.
“Whether or not it’s legitimate, it’s up to our government and lawmakers to decide,” Iam concluded. Staff reporter
