MICE events on the rise

Information released on Friday by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) showed that the number of Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) events in the MSAR had increased significantly in the first quarter of 2017, compared to the same quarter a year earlier.

During the first quarter of 2017, a total of 366 MICE events were held in Macau, consisting of 344 meetings and conferences, seven exhibitions and 15 incentive programs. The total number of participants and attendees of these events numbered about 222,000.

Analyzed by type of MICE activity, the number of meetings and conferences in the first quarter increased by 50 year-
on-year, with the number of participants more than doubling to 54,000, according to DSEC. The number of incentive programs showed a year-on-
year increase of three, to a total of 15 programs.

A total of seven exhibitions organized by non-government organizations were held in the first quarter, three more than the same quarter last year. The number of attendees increased by almost 50 percent to 163,000, while the average duration of the exhibitions was three days, up by 0.2 days year-on-year.

According to information provided to DSEC by exhibition organizers, receipts from the exhibitions amounted to about MOP5.5 million, while expenditure reached MOP5.6 million.

The government department also interviewed 160 exhibitors at these events during the first quarter. Respondents indicated that 97.7 percent of their revenue was generated from product sales.

The survey also showed that a relatively low proportion of exhibitors were satisfied with the promotion of the exhibition (42.8 percent), down by 13.9 percentage points from the previous quarter.
