Tropical storm brings heavy rains to eastern China

Taiwan Typhoon MatmoTropical storm Matmo brought heavy rains and winds to parts of eastern China yesterday following another typhoon that killed at least 56 people in the country’s south. Matmo was traveling north through the mountainous eastern province of Fujian after making landfall on Wednesday, packing gusts of up to 137 kilometers per hour. It was forecast to bring thunderstorms to Shanghai and surrounding areas later yesterday.

3 patients at nursing home castrated

Police in northeastern China have detained a man accused of cutting off the testicles of three patients in a nursing home, state media and officials said yesterday. The man is suspected of tying up two bedridden patients and a mentally disabled one and using a dull razor to castrate them on Tuesday, Xinhua News Agency reported. A 60-year-old victim lost both his testicles while the other two victims, aged 53 and 80, lost one each.

Auhorities lift quarantine after man dies of plague

A nine-day quarantine imposed on parts of a northern Chinese city where a man died of bubonic plague has been lifted, China’s official news agency reported. A total of 151 people were under observation in the city of Yumen in Gansu province after authorities determined they had come in contact with a man who died of the plague July 16. None of them had reported symptoms of the disease. Investigators believe the 38-year-old man contracted the bacterial infection after contact with a marmot, Xinhua said.
