UM to chair Association of Portuguese Speaking Universities

The University of Macau (UM) has been selected to be the next president of the General Assembly of the Association of Portuguese Speaking Universities (AULP) between 2014 and 2017.
UM has become the first higher education institution in Macau elected to the position.
According to a Radio Macau report, UM was elected unanimously.
The AULP General Assembly was attended by more than 200 members from Portuguese-
speaking countries and regions.
Currently there are six institutions in Macau that are AULP members: UM, the Macau Polytechnic Institute (IPM), the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT), the International Institute of Macau, the University of Saint Joseph, and the Asia International Open University (Macau).
Since 2006, the University of Macau has served as vice-president of the AULP for the Asia-Pacific region. It will now replace the University Lurio of Mozambique as leader of the organization.
In the General Assembly, AULP members praised the quality of this year’s annual meeting, as well as the efforts that UM, IPM and IFT have put into organizing the event.
AULP President Professor Jorge Ferrão noted that UM has made great contributions to the AULP, having hosted five annual meetings in 1998, 2003, 2006, 2010, and 2014.
Prof Jorge Ferrão expressed confidence that AULP will continue to make good progress under the leadership of UM.
UM’s vice-rector, Mr Rui Martins, said that the university would work toward reinforcing cooperation between Portuguese-speaking countries.
The newly elected vice-presidents of the AULP are Universidade Lúrio, Mozambique; Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal; Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil; and Universidade Mandume Ya Ndemufayo, Angola.
The 25th annual meeting of the AULP will be held at the University of Cabo Verde in July 2015.
