List of winners of the top Cannes award, the Palme d’Or

As the 62nd Cannes film festival prepares to open, the following is a list of the winners of the festival's top prize for best film through the years.
Once known as the “Grand Prix”, the top award has been the "Palme d'Or" or Golden Palm from 1975 on.
1939: No prize as the festival was halted after 48 hours by Hitler's invasion of Poland.
1946: Eleven films shared the top prize, including:
