Briefs | Customs update e-channel capacity at border
The Macau Customs Service is adding another nine e-channel lanes for vehicles at the Lotus border gate. The construction period starts today, and is expected to end within the next three months. By the time all of the new channels are completed, there will be a total of 19 e-channel lanes for vehicles at the Lotus border gate. Customs is currently updating all e-channel systems across all Macau’s border gates. According to Customs, the e-channels’ vehicle checking capacity will be increased to 70,000 vehicles daily from the current 15,000.
Property owners blamed for potential elevator risks
The Macau Elevator and Escalator Engineering Professional Association have insisted that property owners are partially responsible for the safety conditions of the elevators in their properties, according to a report by Macao Daily News. According to the president of the association, Fong Shao Long, a few property owners are not willing to contribute to the payment of their elevators’ maintenance service. Fong also noted that in some cases, professionals from elevators companies had already suggested to the owners that their elevators needed maintenance and these owners had ignored the warnings. The government’s latest data shows that 70 percent of Macau’s elevators do not have safety certificates.
MUST wins national orienteering competition
The Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) took first place in one of the games of the latest edition of China’s national university students’ orienteering competition. This victory marks the first time that Macau has won the tournament. The leader of the Macau team is a male student from MUST. He took the first place in the 100 meters orienteering competition with a time of three minutes and 22 seconds, only one second ahead of the runner up. The contest was attended by more than 160 universities, comprising a total of 202 teams, corresponding to more than 280 amateur athletes from Chinese universities.
