Justice Minister Ivo Valente explains the census process
The third East Timor National Census of Population and Housing begins officially on 11 July that, according to President Taur Matan Ruak will help understand “the needs of the population.”
This census, the third after those carried out in 2004 and 2010, will collect information on aspects such as the size of the population, education, health, labor market, agriculture, water and sanitation, electricity, mortality rate and poverty levels.
“Better understanding the reality of the country helps with proper planning and to develop policies and programs based on real information, to design a better future for all,” said Taur Matan Ruak, at the launch meeting of the census, cited by Portuguese news agency Lusa.
The census is being prepared by the Directorate General of Statistics of the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the UN Women agency.
The previous census, conducted in 2010, revealed, among other things, that both the population and unemployment had increased, rapid migration to the capital, more access to electricity, television and mobile phones and reduced illiteracy.
