Higher Education Council to be established today

A higher education council chaired by the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture will officially be established today, according to a dispatch published in the Government Official Gazette.

Members of the committee will include up to 15 representatives of Macau’s higher education institutions and Macau associations, who will collaborate with foreign higher education institutions in organizing higher education courses. The committee will also include up to ten representatives from legally constituted associations in the areas of economy, culture, education, youth, research and higher education and up to five individuals of recognized merit, specialists or academics in the area of higher education.

The president of the council, according to its requirements, can invite academics, specialists and other individuals with knowledge or experience in the matters under discussion to participate in the meetings. However, these participants are not entitled to vote.

The term of office for the members of the council will be a renewable period of two years.

The council will voice its opinion on the development of Macau’s higher education and on the formulation of relevant policies, as well as commenting on quality assurance mechanisms for higher education and issuing suggestions.

Besides the abovementioned functions, the council will also submit its opinions on laws related to higher education. The region’s higher education laws will proceed to the council for review as well.

The council is entitled to make recommendations and to issue opinions on subjects related to higher education.
