Civil Protection mechanism drill set for later this month

Wong Sio Chak

Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak announced yesterday that a drill to test the emergency mechanism of the civil protection authority would be held on April 28.

Wong, who was speaking on the sidelines of the Open Day of the Fire Services Bureau, also noted that there was still more to research for the emergency command system – even following his trip to Beijing last month where he and a delegation visited the Public Security Research Institute of the University of Tsinghua.

On the topic, Wong noted that the development is well underway and that it is expected that the system will be part of the civil protection mechanism drill to be held later this month.

Commenting on the recent case of the Judiciary Police (PJ) investigator who was suspended due to alleged involvement in a case in which he is accused of taking illegal profit or advantages from his position, Wong said that such cases only prove that internal mechanisms are working well and that the review made by the authorities in terms of inspection, management and training of staff would fix the existing problems and loopholes.

The Secretary also noted that, the PJ was able to detain and stop the criminal activities and deliver the suspect to the authorities as well as revealing the unlawful conduct of the officer. He described such facts as a positive outcome.

Regarding the police officers who are now using body-mounted cameras, Wong said that authorities are continuing to collect information on the matter. However, “the police will review the matter and opinion from citizens are welcome,” he added.
