Communication interception law under draft procedures

THE Office of the Secretary for Security issued a statement on Friday to the effect that the security authority has already drafted a legal bill concerning the interception and protection of communications. The statement further noted that, back in 2013, the security authority suggested that the SAR government amend the relevant law.

“The responsible department and law experts pointed out that it would be more appropriate to draw up a separate law to legislate on the legal regime of the interception and protection of communications,” the statement reads.

“The security authority has, in recent years, carried out in-depth studies and analysis in the area, combining law enforcement needs with the development of telecommunication technology, […] and drafted the proposal of the separate law entitled Legal Regime of Interception and Protection of Communications,” the statement writes.

Last week, the Law Reform Consultative Committee (CCRJ) had a meeting on the topic with representatives from the security authority.

According to the statement, currently, the security authority is improving the text of the bill incorporating feedback from the CCRJ.

A public consultation period will occur as soon as the related law draft work is completed.
