Kuok Cheong U appointed as new head of public hospital

has been appointed as the director of the Conde de São Januário Central Hospital and vice president of the Health Bureau, according to an announcement by Alexis Tam during yesterday’s policy address.
The incumbent head of the hospital, Chan Wai Sin, will end his post at the beginning of next month, at which point the hospital director-to-be will set to take up his position in management. The secretary said that the management change at the hospital had been introduced not only for the purposes of enhancing the overall medical service, which used to receive barrages of public criticism, but also for better internal management at the government-owned hospital.
Alexis Tam also praised the prospective hospital director for his “professionalism,” “being easily communicative” and “his willingness to take others’ advice.” Asked if Kuok Cheong U’s performance would possibly fall short of the secretary’s expectations, he asserted that Kuok would take responsibility for his actions.
The director-to-be, also considered a guru in medical imageology, told the media that he has been preparing himself for the top position of the public hospital. However, Kuok claimed that he would need assistance from the Health Bureau, the secretary’s administrative policies, as well as suggestions from lawmakers in order to help achieve the “glorious five years” assertion spelt out by Alexis Tam in a previous statement.
Born in August 1960, the 54-year-old completed his medical bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the medical college of Jinan University in mainland China in 1986 and 1998 respectively. Since 2004, he has served in the public hospital’s radiology department as a chief radiologist. Staff reporter
