Two people infected with dengue fever have passed away in Guangzhou, Macau’s Health Bureau (SSM) revealed yesterday. SSM said in a statement that the dengue fever outbreak in the neighboring region is serious, as 6,089 cases have been recorded so far – a number three times higher than that of the previous year.
As of September 22, Guangzhou authorities had recorded a total of 5,190 cases of people infected with the dengue virus. Two of them have died. A total of 118 cases were confirmed in Zhongshan along with 40 in the neighboring city of Zhuhai.
“Figures provided indicate that the epidemic situation in the neighboring region is severe,” the Health Bureau stressed, adding that this presents a great risk to Macau.
The Health Bureau urged Macau citizens to reinforce safety and preventative measures. Until now, authorities here have recorded one case of a local infected with dengue virus, with another seven imported cases also being recorded. The risk of mosquito proliferation in Macau is still high, the Health Bureau pointed out.
The bureau does not rule out the possibility of an increase in dengue virus cases in Macau, even on an epidemic level. The first dengue case in Macau this year was revealed early this month. An 82-year-old woman is believed to have contracted the disease near the Camões Garden, authorities said. Dengue fever is transmitted by different types of mosquitoes.
