Arts | Cultural Centre dubs ‘Rice’ a success

The Macao Cultural Centre (CCM) presented “Rice” by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre last Saturday evening. According to a statement issued by CCM, the dancers, who have been trained and mentored by choreographer Lin Hwai-min, stepped on stage for their display of sharp, meticulous moves, in combination with the sounds of traditional Hakka songs and classical compositions by Camille Saint-Saëns and Richard Strauss.  The audience witnessed a sequence that balanced hyper-slow intense moves with bursts of fury, in a choreographic blend of modern dance and martial arts.

In parallel to the performance, CCM organized a string of activities which included a workshop hosted by Cloud Gate’s performers that was designed to lead dance enthusiasts to explore their physical capabilities.

On the day of the show, the audience had the chance to attend a pre-performance talk and a back stage tour.

Founded in 1973, the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre has dedicated itself to transforming ancient aesthetics into a thrilling and contemporary display of physical movement.

The troupe is internationally known as leaders in the field of modern dance and have been frequent guests at New York’s Next Wave Festival. They have also performed on other international stages, such as London’s Sadler’s Wells and Barbican Centre, Moscow’s Chekhov International Theatre Festival or the Movimentos in Germany.
