IPIM signs agreements at Guangdong-Macau Fair

The Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) signed four co-operation memorandums at the opening ceremony of the Guangdong & Macau Branded Products Fair 2018 on Friday, all with the aim of promoting Macau’s role as a platform for trade between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

The memorandums were also signed by various entities in Guangdong province, namely the Bureau of Commerce of Huizhou Municipality, the Bureau of Commerce of Dongguan City, the Bureau of Commerce of Zhaoqing City, and the Jiangmen Bureau of Commerce.

Moreover, the Investment Promotion Bureau of Congjiang County used the opportunity to sign a “Strategic Cooperation Agreement” with China Products Company.

According to a statement issued by IPIM, Fang Shaoming, an associate researcher of Bureau of Commerce of Dongguan City, said that the areas of co-operation covered in the scope of the memorandum between Dongguan and Macau are related to industry, research and the development of Macau as a platform between China and Portuguese- speaking countries.

He further said that foreign capital in Dongguan used to be invested in the U.S. and European countries mainly, however, since Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’, Dongguan has seen a surge in its exports to countries along the ‘Belt and Road’ and to Portuguese-speaking countries.

Nine enterprises from Dongguan participated in this year’s Fair, mainly exhibiting food and spices.

Meanwhile, Zhao Ruisi, Director of Jiangmen Bureau of Commerce, revealed that he believed the signing of the Economic and Trade Cooperation Memorandum with IPIM could elevate economic and trade co-operations between Jiangmen and Macau.

According to IPIM, Zhao added that co-operation between Macau and Jiangmen was always close, but recently the jurisdiction has been able to tap into Macau’s links with the Portuguese-speaking world to explore new business opportunities.

Jiangmen organized for 11 enterprises to join the Fair this year, many of which were return exhibitors.
