
The third quarter of this year saw a continued shift towards digital payments, with growth in both mobile and card-based transactions, according to data from the Monetary Authority of Macao.
The value of mobile payment transactions rose by 3.6% quarter-on-quarter to MOP8.4 billion, despite a slight drop in the number of transactions to 96.6 million, with the average transaction value at MOP87.
By the end of September, the number of mobile payment terminals and QR code signs amounted to 110,821.
Meanwhile, card usage also increased, with credit card turnover reaching a 7.8% quarter-on-quarter increase to MOP6.3 billion, while the number of debit card transactions, excluding cash withdrawals, was 1.8 million, and debit card turnover rose by 9.7% to MOP476.1 million.
Credit card repayments, including payments for interest and fees, increased by 12.3% to MOP6.4 billion.
In addition, the credit card delinquency ratio improved, falling from 2.8% to 2.7%, even as the total credit limit granted by banks rose slightly to MOP50.5 billion. Ricaela Diputado
