A middle-aged local woman is suspected of falling victim to an online scam after reporting a financial loss of more than MOP60,000, according to the Judiciary Police (PJ).
The incident occurred last week when the victim downloaded a gaming application onto her mobile phone. While using the game, she was contacted by an unknown individual in the chat room who expressed interest in purchasing her gaming account for HKD8,000.
The victim agreed, and the potential buyer provided her with a link directing her to a third-party trading platform. Following the instructions, she registered and opened an account to facilitate the sale.
Shortly afterward, the scammer falsely claimed that the payment had been transferred to her new account. However, when the victim attempted to withdraw the funds, she discovered that her account had been frozen.
Seeking resolution, she contacted the platform’s customer service and was told that the only way to unfreeze the account was to purchase a specified number of game point cards.
Acting on these instructions, the victim went to a local convenience store and purchased 25 game point cards, each valued at more than MOP2,400.
Despite complying with the demands, her account remained frozen. Realizing she had been deceived, the victim filed a report with the authorities, and PJ is currently investigating the case. Ricaela Diputado
