The Macao Cultural Centre (CCM) announced it will be presenting a second date for the contemporary ballet performance of “Carmen”.
The ballet adaptation of Bizet’s operatic masterpiece by Spain’s National Dance Company (CND) is set to perform an additional show on November 3.
CND is returning to CCM’s Grand Auditorium, this time guided by Swedish choreographer Johan Inger. According to a press release issued by CCM, Inger will bring a pure, uncontaminated representation of a classic production conceived for dance and music lovers alike.
Based on one of the most successful operas ever produced, “Carmen’s” plot revolves around a love triangle composed by Don José, the main prison guard; Carmen; and the Toreador, who in this version is portrayed as a pop star.
By removing the stereotypes usually associated with the story, CCM stated that Inger’s “Carmen” is a sober, contemporary version choreographed with a subtle hint of the 1960s. The production won him the Benois de la Danse prize in 2016.
Founded in 1979, CND’s vast repertoire was developed by a number of renowned artistic directors and choreographers.
