National Anthem Law review to take place in ‘April or May’

As part of preparations for a review of the law regulating the use and protection of the national flag, symbols and anthem, the government has made progress on a draft that is expected to be ready for approval in “April or May” this year.

The information came from the Secretary for Administration and Justice Sonia Chan, as cited by the Government Information Bureau.

Chan discussed the topic with the media on the sidelines of an event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Basic Law Enactment and the fifth anniversary of the Inauguration of the Macau Basic Law Commemorative Gallery, which was also opening a new exhibition to the public.

Questioned on the topic, the Secretary noted that the review focuses mainly on occasions where the national anthem is played and sung, as well as at all events involving the hoisting of the flag. “There are no big change[s] in what concerns to the increase of penalties,” she said.

According to information from Chan, the government has already drafted a version that is currently being analyzed and is undergoing internal legislative procedures.
