Number of cars and motorbikes decreases

At the end of June 2018, the total number of licensed motor vehicles dropped by 2.3 percent year-on-year to 238,006, according to the transport and communications statistics released this week by the Statistics and Census Service. The number of light motorcycles (27,172) and light automobiles (106,968) decreased by 14.2 percent and 2.3 percent respectively, while heavy motorcycles (96,196) grew by 1.7 percent. New registration of motor vehicles fell by 4.4 percent year-on-year to 3,340 in the second quarter, yet rose by 3.3 percent year-on-year to 7,495 in the first half of the year.

There were 3,333 cases of traffic accidents in the second quarter of 2018 and the number of victims totaled 1,034. Both registered a decrease; 8.2 percent and 9.4 percent respectively year-on-year. In the first half of 2018, the number of traffic accidents decreased by 5.4 percent year-on-year to 6,817 cases, resulting in 2,184 casualties, 5 of which were fatalities.

In the first half of 2018, cross-border vehicular traffic rose by 2.1 percent year-on-year to 2,423,001, of which traffic through the Cotai border (29.6 percent of the total) increased by 15.2 percent.

Commercial flight movements at the Macau International Airport totaled 29,853, up by 13.2 percent year-on-year. Flight movements to and from mainland China, Thailand and Taiwan grew by 17.2 percent, 14.3 percent and 2.6 percent respectively, while those to and from the Republic of Korea dropped by 9.9 percent.

The gross weight of containerized cargo traveling by land dropped by 13.2 percent year-on-year to 7,254 tones, of which cargo passing through the Checkpoint of Cotai (6,900 tonnes) accounted for 95.1 percent.
