Macau received around 3.03 million visitors in August, representing a 14.5 percent increase from July, but still witnessed a 3.8 percent year-on-year decline, according to data released by the Statistics and Census Service yesterday.
According to the statistics agency, tourists from the Chinese mainland account for over 60 percent of the total, showing a decline of 1.7 percent in August year-on-year. The number of visitors from  Hong Kong and Taiwan increased by 0.8 percent and 3.5 percent year- on-year, respectively.
The average length of visitors’ stays increased to 1.1 days, and that of overnight visitors rose to 2.1 days. In the first eight months of this year, the number of visitor arrivals totaled 20.43 million, down by 3.2 percent year-on-year, with those from the mainland decreasing by 4.1 percent. The number of long-haul visitors from the United States, Australia, Canada and Britain also dropped.
To fill in the gap of the number of tourists, Macau has launched a series of promotional campaigns in neighboring regions, which focus on the diverse array of activities to enhance tourist experiences. Travel packages and hotels at favorable prices have also been rolled out to draw visitors to Macau.   MDT/Agencies
