Taxi surcharge to rise to MOP10, two added locations

The taxi surcharge of MOP5 for boarding a taxi at the Macau International Airport, taxi station of Taipa Ferry Terminal or the campus of the University of Macau on Hengqin Island, will be altered ahead of the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau (HKZM) Bridge. The director of the Transport Bureau, Lam Hin San, mentioned the changes during a press conference late last week where he addressed several topics related to public transportation and traffic adjustments ahead of the opening of the HKZM Bridge.

The proposal, discussed at the meeting of the Transport Advisory Committee held prior to the press conference, proposed to add two more locations to the current three where there could be an additional taxi surcharge, as well as to increase the amount of the current one by MOP5 to MOP10.

On the topic, Lam announced, “for the time being, there are only three places [where drivers] can charge the extra MOP5. We propose to add two more… the taxi stand of the Cotai border [Lotus Flower Border crossing] and the new taxi stand to be operating at the [HKZM] Bridge’s artificial island,” adding, “From three, we move to five locations [where the surcharge will be enforced] and we also propose to raise the amount from MOP5 to MOP10,” he said, noting, “the proposal was well received by the representatives of this sector [in the meeting].”

Lam also added that, on the artificial island and close to the east-side parking lot, “there will be a taxi stand and bus terminal with a capacity for 70 buses and taxis.” RM
