The exhibition “Determined Spirit – Calligraphy and Painting of Fu Shen”, which was inaugurated on Monday at the Macau Museum of Art (MAM), features 68 painting and calligraphy works by renowned academic Professor Fu Shen.
Fu Shen is a renowned art historian and connoisseur of calligraphy and painting, according to a statement from the Cultural Affairs Bureau.
Born in Shanghai, the scholar graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at the Taiwan Normal University and studied his masters program under professionals such as Huang Junbi and Pu Ru.
Following his work at the Palace Museum in Taipei, he furthered his studies in the United States and obtained a PhD from Princeton University.
The artist was also an associate professor at Yale University for four years and later on worked as the Director of the Chinese Art Department at the Freer and Sackler Galleries in Washington D.C. for 14 years.
His artistic style has been strongly influenced by his in-depth studies, his work in painting and calligraphy authentication and his private research.
The artist uses a variety of techniques in his works, such as semi-cursive and seal script, giving each technique a unique character, the statement added.
He advocates that art should reflect the spirit of its time, and his works use not only traditional patterns but also experimental techniques to form new and different characteristics.
This exhibition features painting and calligraphy works by Fu Shen created in different periods of time throughout his life, encapsulating his acquired wisdom in the last decades through his work in art history research and the authentication of painting and calligraphy works.
The art exhibition is held until November 19.
