Gov’t in no position to offer remarks on UN corruption case

Local authorities gave a wide berth to the high-profile graft case involving the local businessman Ng Lap Seng, citing the stage of judicial procedures that the case was brought in as the primary reason.
Following the Government Spokesperson Office’s refusal to comment on the case that grabbed many headlines starting three weeks ago, Wong Sio Chak declined to disclose much information on the saga, while professing no details were available at the second.
“As to such a question, the case has entered the judicial process, we aren’t in a position to give comments,” he explained. “Yet regardless of the security departments, especially the Judiciary Police, we haven’t gotten any related information. Thus we have no such information to offer.”
In addition, the secretary stressed that the investigation agencies lacked the rights to initiate probes, yet adding that “they would [initiate] if it was necessary in the future.”
“It isn’t within Macau’s jurisdiction,” he claimed. “We could only make an evaluation after the incident becomes more public and clear. Yet at the moment, we don’t see this as a possibility or necessity.”
