Tennis | Nadal wins, Ostapenko claims first Grand Slam title

His clay-court prowess as unassailable as ever, Rafael Nadal won his record 10th French Open title by dominating 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 in the final yesterday. No other man or woman has won 10 championships at the same major in the Open era, which began in 1968. On the women’s tournament, Simona Halep looked to be on the verge of claiming her first Grand Slam title as well as the No. 1 spot in the rankings. Then it all fell apart. Facing the unseeded Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the French Open final, Halep took the first set and led 3-0 in the second. She then had three break points to move to 4-0. She eventually lost the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in her second final at Roland Garros.
