UM’s Dean of students, Mr Peter Yu, has told TDM that the University of Macau’s old campus in Taipa will be used for evening classes and promotional activities.
The government recently confirmed its intention to maintain some of the old campus’ operations, namely the Library building, the Center for Macau Studies, the Center for Engineering Research and Testing, as well as the Center for Continuing Education.
“[The old] university campus will serve several purposes. On the one hand, it will serve to house evening classes and promotional activities. This is convenient for residents in Taipa, to come to this campus for classes and information. We will maintain the library as part of the university,” he said.
In another development, the University of Macau has also launched a new five-year Law Degree, which will provide training in both Portuguese and Chinese. Students will also be to enroll in the University of Coimbra, Portugal, during the first year of their degree.
In this first year, students will attend classes in the University of Coimbra’s Faculty of Law before returning to Macau to complete four more years, explained Mr Paul Pang, coordinator of UM’s Office for Academia.
He explained that this Law Degree is intended to address the needs of Macau residents specifically, as the university aims to train more bilingual professionals. 28 students have enrolled and will now attend classes in the University of Coimbra. The university will help to support students during their first year, and the Macau Foundation will also provide MOP30,000.
