Forty-six individuals and four entities were presented with medals and honorary titles for their distinguished contributions to Macau during the 2014 Medals and Certificates Conferment Ceremony held yesterday, at the Macau Cultural Centre.
The recipient of Decoration of Honour – Golden Lotus, Victor Ng, stressed to the media that the honor he conferred upon him “is to all the citizens.” “I’m very glad to witness Macau developing vigorously and its people living and working in peace during the past fifteen years,” said the former president of the Macau Foundation.
Ms Chio Ngan Ieng, vice president of the Women’s General Association of Macau, was awarded the Silver Lotus. She expressed gratitude to the SMAR government for its recognition and encouragement to people who engage in work concerning women.
Following the two leading honorees, recipients received their awards from Chief Executive Chui Sai On, under the categories of Medals of Merit and the Medals of Distinguished Services, as well as the Certificates of Merit.
One of the recipients of the Medal of Merit in Philanthropy was Sister Arlene Trant of the Maryknoll Sisters, a pioneer in promoting sign language in Macau. “I hope this medal can draw people’s attention to the deaf and hard of hearing community. Not only that, I hope to spread love to all the underprivileged people in the society,” she said.
President of TDM’s Executive Council, Manuel Pires, received a Medal of Merit in Culture on behalf of the public broadcaster, stating that the honor means a new beginning and inspires TDM to excel further.
After receiving a Medal of Merit in Tourism, the Macau Travel Agency Association president, Lao Nga Wong, suggested that “there is still much room for the local tourism industry to develop in the next decade. I hope to continue offering suggestions and ideas with related sectors.”
A Medal of Merit recipient in Industry and Commerce, the founder of German-Macau Business Association, Mr Un Chong San, also praised the space and opportunities created by the preferential policies for the region. “Hengqin will be the backing to Macau,” he said.
The Medals of Merit also recognized outstanding contributors under the categories of Education, Professions, and Sport. Meanwhile, two Medals for Distinguished Service – Medal for Bravery were bestowed to the Judiciary Police’s Division of Drug Criminal Cases Investigation and the rescuers of the Fire Services Bureau’s Operations and Ambulance Division.
José Chu, former director of the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau who retired last month, also received a Medal for Distinguished Service in Dedication. He told the media that he will keep paying attention to the public administration issues after he retires.
