CHINA The president has called for the Communist Party’s leadership over the country’s universities to be enhanced in a continuing tightening of ideological controls across a wide range of society. Xi Jinping said universities should publicize Marxism, one of the theoretical foundations of the Party.
GREECE Prosecutors in Italy say they fear more bodies will be found aboard the crippled Greek ferry Norman Atlantic, adrift for the third day after a fire broke out on a car deck, with 10 people killed in the ensuing chaos.
PUERTO RICO Police say they have seized a record 110 weapons as part of a one-day crackdown on crime across the U.S. territory. Police Chief Jose Caldero says officers also are serving arrest warrants for 87 suspects accused of drug trafficking and weapon violations. Puerto Rico police and U.S. federal agents have arrested 63 suspects so far.
RUSSIA Police have detained President Vladimir Putin’s chief foe, who has broken the terms of house his arrest to attend a protest of several thousand just outside the Kremlin. The unsanctioned demonstration on Tuesday came hours after Alexei Navalny, the anti-corruption campaigner, was found guilty of fraud and given a suspended sentence of 3.5 years. His brother was sent to prison. Meanwhile, several thousand people rally just outside the Kremlin in unsanctioned protest.
BAHRAIN The UN human rights chief yesterday called on Bahrain’s government to immediately release the leader of the country’s main Shiite opposition group and the European Union warned that his arrest could further destabilize an already fragile political environment.
USA A California man who was pulled off his surfboard and bitten by a juvenile great white shark was released from the hospital yesterday, a spokesman for the medical center said. Meanwhile, in Australia authorities are searching for a killer shark.
USA California public health officials issued an alert ysterday after finding “very strong evidence” that an adult film actor became infected with HIV as a result of unprotected sex on an out-of-state film shoot. The Department of Public Health said the male actor tested positive for the virus that causes AIDS after engaging in unprotected sex with several other male actors during two separate film shoots. He had tested negative before the shoot.
