Sociologist Paulo Godinho warned yesterday at the 23rd Socialist Party (PS) congress that cases of violations of freedoms and breaches of the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration are multiplying in Macau and appealed to his fellow congressmen “not to ignore the abuses.” Godinho, a Macau resident who lived here for decades, presented a motion to the congress that asks PS, the party which currently holds the power in Lisbon, to ensure compliance with the Portuguese-Chinese agreement, considering that it is not “minimally acceptable to turn a blind eye to [violations].” “This is not at all acceptable” and “PS cannot ignore what is happening in Macau, much less say that the joint declaration is respected when there are numerous examples [to the contrary],” both against the freedom of the press and against politicians that could be “less friendly to the established power,” he said inferring the AL elections.
Duterte lifts casino ban in Boracay
Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has lifted a moratorium on casino operations in the country’s top holiday island to generate taxes for its Covid-19 pandemic response, the presidential spokesperson said this weekend. The firebrand leader has had a longstanding opposition to gambling, halting the construction of new casinos in the Philippines. “The president has given his go signal allowing the operation of a casino in Boracay,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement. He did not specify if the lifting of the moratorium would be temporary or permanent. The move augurs well for provisional casino license holders like Alliance Global Group Inc, and the partnership of Leisure & Resorts World Corp and Macau’s Galaxy Entertainment Group. Galaxy can start its operations focusing on foreign gamblers, Alfredo Lim, president of the gaming regulator, told Reuters.
