Figures released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicate that the number of households using the internet in Macau has grown 2.7% in 2021 when compared year-on-year with the previous year, now reaching 94.6% of total households.
According to the same survey, of those, some 98% use mobile networks to access the internet (+4.6% year-on-year).
Meanwhile, home broadband access to the internet has registered a growth of 1% to a total of 90.1% of households when compared to 2020.
The number of internet users totaled 570,000 with an internet penetration rate rising by 1% to 88.5%.
The younger generations, unsurprisingly, lead the share of the population with a higher internet penetration rate of 99.5% in the population aged between 15 and 24 years.
As for the older generations, the internet penetration rate for senior citizens aged 65 or above is now 65.3%, having registered an increase of over 9% in just one year.
In addition, it has been reported that 68.3% of the population aged between 3 and 14 years use the internet frequently.
A total of 95.5% of internet users in Macau use the internet daily, recording a median of around three hours per day spent online, a percentage that remains stable from the previous year.
Most users use the internet for communication (95.4%) and online entertainment (81.9%) while use for internet banking (60.7%) has grown 10% in just one year. RM
