Self-drive Macau bus trial in Hengqin precede intelligent-driving test area

Macau’s first autonomous driving bus recently completed a 17-day smart-driving test on roads within the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Science & Technology Industrial Park of Cooperation Between Guangdong & Macao in Hengqin.

For the July 15-31 trial, a research team upgraded functionality and reliability in line with a performance route on the University of Macau (UM) campus. The latest research achievements were used in driving environment perception, planning, and decision-making.

For instance, the traditional GPS tracking mode now has simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm to realize automatic environmental map construction using laser radar and other sensors.

Relying on UM’s foundation in autonomous vehicle research and Guangdong-
Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin advantages in support policies and ample space, the research team will establish an international intelligent driving testing platform in the Greater Bay Area. The platform will provide automated standardized testing and certification services for autonomous-driving manufacturers in Guangdong and Macau.

Previously, the platform collected data (traffic signals and pedestrians and vehicles on the road) with the help of artificial intelligence, big data processing, Internet of Things, and cloud computing. This ensures that the bus runs safely and reliably in an open and uncertain environment and forms a highly efficient transport system for people, vehicles, and roads.
