The Health Bureau (SSM) has released statistics on the number of suicides in the first half of this year (1H). These figures amend information released late last month by the medical doctor from the board of directors of the Conde de São Januario Hospital Medical Center who told the media that there was a record of 53 cases in the 1H.
The new release from SSM reduces the figure to 38, noting that in the second quarter (Q2) there were 19 cases reported, nine fewer than in the first quarter (Q1) of the year.
According to SSM, the Q2 figure represents a decrease of around 32% when compared to Q1.
SSM also added that, according to an analysis of the data, the increase or decrease in cases of death by suicide in Macau is easily influenced by accidental factors, the main and possible causes of suicide being chronic or physical illnesses, mental illnesses, gambling issues or financial problems.
With the Covid-19 pandemic lasting over two years and all its related consequences, the SSM says, “citizens inevitably manifest different levels of psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression and mental stress.” SSM recommends citizens maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, physical exercise, enough sleep, no smoking, reducing alcohol consumption and finding ways to relax.
Concurrently, the SSM asks people to maintain proactive contact and care for those close to them, especially those suffering from chronic diseases and the elderly. “People in emotional distress can also actively seek and resort to professional assistance and advice,” SSM said in the same statement.
People in these situations can seek help at the healthcare centers of Tap Seac, Fai Chi Kei, Areia Preta, Ilha Verde, Jardins do Oceano, Nossa Senhora do Carmo- Lago, Praia do Manduco, and Seac Pai Van, where outpatient mental health consultations are operating.
Additionally, they can also seek help from non-profit associations that have established community psychological counseling groups and that provide counseling services to citizens free of charge.
According to information from the Judiciary Police yesterday, a 26-year-old male resident of Macau, is the latest case of alleged suicide, committed yesterday. The case is still under investigation by the police to confirm the cause of death.
