A 42-year-old local woman was seriously injured Monday evening after the sign from a private building’s parking lot fell on her as she was walking along Rua do Campo.
Passersby promptly helped her, calling emergency services.
The woman suffered several injuries to her right side, including fractures to her neck and potentially one of her ankles, according to a preliminary report from first attending rescuers.
She was taken to the Conde de São Januário Hospital Center for further evaluation and medical care and, for the time being, no updates are available on her condition.
The Public Works Bureau’s preliminary analysis indicates rust, decay and poor maintenance of the sign’s supports may have caused the incident, according to reports in the Chinese language newspaper, Macao Daily News. The exact causes of the incident are under investigation.
The falling sign, made of wood and metal and about 2 meters long and 1 meter wide, was above the access gate to a private parking lot at the Ngan Fai Building.
Previously displaying advertising from a commercial establishment on the upper floor, the sign was, at the time, displaying information in the Chinese language about access to the parking lot.
