A mainland man was caught attempting to smuggle GBP10,000 of cash into Macau using an electric wheelchair, a scheme that was prevented by customs officers at Gongbei Port. The incident occurred early Sunday morning, Aug. 25, when the man attempted to exit the country through a non-declaration channel.
Customs officials became suspicious when they noticed the man exhibiting signs of nervousness as he maneuvered his wheelchair. Upon further inspection, officers discovered two stacks of black plastic bags hidden behind the wheelchair’s back cushion, containing a total of GBP10,000, equivalent to approximately MOP106,300.
This case is part of a growing trend where individuals exploit mobility devices to conceal illicit items. Recent reports indicate an uptick in similar incidents, with customs officials ramping up inspections at border crossings. In the past year alone, several travelers have been intercepted while attempting to smuggle various goods, including mobile phones and electronic devices, hidden within modified electric wheelchairs.
The man involved in this latest incident had reportedly crossed the border multiple times within a 15-day timespan, raising further suspicions about his activities. Customs officials are continuing their investigation to determine if he will face criminal charges for this smuggling attempt.
