Mandatory oath for civil servants

Public servants in Macau will soon be mandated to take an oath affirming their commitment to the Basic Law and allegiance to the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR). This requirement, applicable to both new and existing civil servants, was announced by the Executive Council. Violating this oath could result in disciplinary actions, including dismissal. The proposed legislation aims to amend the civil servants’ statute and will define disloyal behavior clearly. Civil servants will have 90 days to comply, with refusal leading to automatic annulment of their positions. The sincerity of the oath will be evaluated by superiors during the process.
