Car repair shops lose HKD272,000 to fraudsters impersonating firefighters

Two car repair shops in Macau have reported a combined loss of HKD272,000 after falling victim to an “order fraud” scam in which scammers impersonated fire station personnel to place fake tire orders.

Authorities stated that the fraudsters contacted the repair shops, claiming to be “fire department personnel” in need of over ten replacement tires for a fire department vehicle. They alleged a conflict with the department’s original supplier and instructed the repair shops to place the order on the department’s behalf. To entice the victims, the scammers promised the dealers could “pocket the difference” from the order.

One of the victims received a fabricated transfer screenshot, convincing them the payment was legitimate. After transferring the funds to the designated supplier, the victim became suspicious when additional tire orders were requested, eventually realizing they had been scammed.

In light of these incidents, local law enforcement is urging citizens and businesses to remain vigilant.

They stressed the importance of verifying the legitimacy of such requests, as scammers often impersonate officials from various government departments and change their tactics. Authorities recommend consulting banks and verifying details before transferring funds based on potentially fraudulent information. Victoria Chan
