FIA Formula One Race Director and safety delegate Charlie Whiting was in Macau yesterday, conducting an inspection of the Guia Circuit ahead of another edition of the Macau Grand Prix (MGP), which will be held from November 13 –16.
The MGP Committee said in a statement that Mr Whiting had assessed the entire circuit and its infrastructure, including the pavement and its ongoing construction works.
Charlie Whiting provided suggestions to the MGP Committee regarding road safety measures, including the installment of barriers, gates, and protection nets.
The Committee said that it would now proceed with preparatory works, in order to ensure that the event takes place in its usual fashion.
This year, the Committee will adjust the location and the size of the circuit’s barrier gates, aiming to more effectively ease traffic congestion each day after the races.
Other security measures will also be in place: protection nets will be set up to ensure pedestrians’ safety in the event of an accident.
“The Committee is committed to providing a high level of security, meeting FIA’s regulations, aiming to ensure that the Macau Grand Prix is organized in a safe environment,” they stressed.
Each year, Charlie Whiting travels to Macau ahead of the Grand Prix in order to conduct inspections and to assess the safety measures implemented by the event’s organizers.
The 61st Macau Grand Prix will include a new race, titled the “Chinese Racing Cup,” in which drivers from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau will all compete.
The budget for this year’s Grand Prix amounts to MOP190 million, whilst organizers expect to gain MOP43 million in revenue. CP
