Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has officially confirmed that it is considering the acquisition of spy software developed by the controversial company Hacking Team. “We are now in the process of inquiring into a product by this company,” ICAC’s Commissioner Simon Peh confirmed, as cited by the South China Morning Post.
An e-mail between an ICAC principal investigator and the head of Hacking Team’s Singapore branch shows that ICAC was interested in the company’s Galileo remote control system, particularly for mobile phones.
Among the more than one million Hacking Team-related emails released by WikiLeaks are also messages that indicate that the Macau Judiciary Police and the Commission Against Corruption have shown an interest in Hacking Team’s software. Both institutions refused to disclose any details of their business arrangements with the Milan-based company, stating that their investigations are done in “accordance with the law.”
Commenting on the case yesterday, the Macau Judiciary Police director Chau Wai Kuong said that “the police always abides by the law and if that wasn’t the case there would be consequences.” PB
