An arts association and a private enterprise donated HKD30,000 and MOP20,000 respectively to the Macau Red Cross yesterday for the earthquake that took place in Ludian County, Yunnan.
As of yesterday, the Macau Red Cross had received donations that totaled MOP19,588,647.3 for the earthquake.
The Times previously reported that the Macau Red Cross has dispatched officials to the earthquake-affected region to assess the conditions.
They had found that some resources were unable to reach part of the province due to its narrow roads. The rainy weather and high temperature also meant that bodies were decomposing very quickly.
A Macau Red Cross staff member told the Times that the officials have already returned to Macau, though she did not mention whether more Red Cross officials would be sent to the disaster-affected region.
Chinese news agency Xinhua has reported that Ludian is in urgent need of equipment and facilities for garbage and human waste treatment.
A Yunnan hygiene department official said that due to the difficult traffic conditions, garbage collection trucks were unable to enter some earthquake-hit villages.
She called on enterprises and research institutions to come up with innovations that can help with improving hygiene in Ludian. JPL
