The deputy director of the Health Bureau (SSM) and director of the Conde de São Januário Central Hospital (CHCSJ), Chan Wai Sin, has revealed that the Bureau is in the preliminary stages of considering the establishment of a medical school in the University of Macau (UM).
Chan Wai Sin broke the news on a TDM Radio talk show yesterday morning. “In terms of [establishing] a medical school, we are going to conduct a preliminary study within UM. I believe that more information will be released later,” he said.
Some listeners called into the show and asked about the possible setting-up of a public nursing school. Chan Wai Sin explained that there used to be a nursing school, which had been established by the government, before the sovereignty handover. However, due to the fact that it could not award university-level certificates, the authorities merged it into the Macau Polytechnic Institute.
The deputy director said that they would continue to look at the situation in Macau and decide whether there is a need to allow non-residents to work as nurses in Macau.
