Jung Chang, other authors not welcomed to Macau

Organizers of The Script Road – Macau Literary Festival 2018 announced that Jung Chang, along with several other authors, will not be coming to the region for the festival, contrary to an earlier announcement. Jung Chang is the author of the acclaimed “Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China” (1991), dubbed the “most read book” about China. She is also co-author of a controversial biography of Mao, which is forbidden in mainland China. Undercover author Suki Kim, and former secret service agent and novelist James Church, will also not be attending the festival which is set to run from March 10 to 25. Helder Beja, program director of the festival, told TDM that the organizers were “officially” told that the visit of said authors to Macau was “inconvenient,” hence their entry in Macau was not assured. “The festival didn’t want to put the authors in that position and took the decision of canceling their participation. The situation largely surpasses the scope of the festival,” Beja said. North Korean defector and human-rights activist Hyeonseo Lee will also not attend the event, having alleged personal reasons to justify her absence.
