Cinematheque to feature film noir series

Cinematheque Passion has collaborated with Comuna de Han-Ian to bring “The Good, the Bad and the Ambiguous – A Film Noir Series” to Macau from September 9 to 24. The series will present to the public a total of 10 classic films from Europe, the USA, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong.

‘Film noir’ is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, which were popular between the early 1940s to the late 1950s.

This genre is associated with a low-key, black-and-white visual style that has roots in German expressionist cinematography, combined with elements from French Poetic Realism, New York style street photography and detective novels.

Six of the featured films are black and white productions from the 1940s to the 1960s. The remaining four are variations and neo-film noir. Some films include: The Maltese Falcon (1941), highly-regarded as the first film noir in the 1940s; Le Samouraï (1967), starring French actor Alain Delon (1967); Chinatown (1974), directed by Roman Polanski; Old Boy (2003) by Park Chan-wook, and The Secret (1979) by Ann Hui.

In addition, a talk titled “There is a kind of film – dark film” will be held on September 9. LV
