Civil servants set up association to promote positive image

3-0829112015Over fifty civil servants have formed an association to connect the younger generation of civil servants with top-level officials. The group also aims to enhance the reputation of public servants through various initiatives.
The Macau Youth Civil Servants’ Association’s founding members were sworn in on Sunday in the presence of major officials and representatives of other youth-oriented organizations.
“The MSAR government has long valued the growth and development of youths. It’s necessary to set up an organization exclusively to serve and provide a voice for young civil servants, as they are a great and valuable asset to the region,” said the association’s head, Lao Hio Fai, who works as a physician at the public hospital.
According to the latest figures from the Statistics and Census Service Bureau, close to 30,000 out of the local workforce totaling approximately 400,000 are employed in public services. Furthermore, almost half of the government’s manpower is under 40 years old, according to Lao, who stressed the need for such people to have a voice.
The association, whose initial membership base already includes representatives from across all public departments, seeks to continue recruiting more members to undertake a series of planned activities.
The association’s head revealed that the group expected to attract secretary- and bureau-level officials, along with young civil servants, in gatherings to discuss social issues.
