An unemployed woman set her neighbor’s safety net, which was installed on the balcony, ablaze last Friday due to her having endured disturbing construction  noise stemming from the victim’s apartment, which is currently under renovation.
The 47-year-old arsonist who lives with her friends nextdoor to the victim on the fifth floor of a building located in the Travessa da Barra was arrested by the Judiciary Police (PJ) yesterday. Irritated by the enduring noise that disrupted her daily rest, the local, surnamed Lou, used a cigarette lighter to burn the mesh, which she also alleged was protruding over her side too much.
Nonetheless, the noises generated from the refurbishment works, according to the authorities, did not breach any law governing noise pollution in the territory.
The victim discovered the fire on the same day and reported the incident to the police on Sunday morning. The police identified the suspect after being told that she had earlier complained to her neighbor about the noise. Lou has since admitted to the arson.
The suspect who burst into tears before being shown to the media yesterday afternoon held a matching criminal record, after having set a corridor on fire in another building in 2006. Staff reporter
